do stakes always mean explosions?
no, thank god
stakes mean something changes if this goes wrong
so consequences
consequences the reader can feel
money, reputation, time, love, health, status, sanity, opportunity. pick your poison
what about a tiny essay?
tiny stakes still count
“you’ll waste three months polishing the wrong draft” is not Avengers-level danger, but it matters to a writer
so jeopardy is basically “why now?”
partly
it’s also “why keep going?” if nothing can be lost, the reader’s brain powers down
my brain does love powering down
think of stakes like a phone battery warning
at 100%, nobody cares. at 4%, every action gets interesting
wait, can you overdo it?
absolutely
fake stakes smell awful. not every newsletter is a civilization-ending event
thank you
drill: add one honest cost to your intro
if the reader ignores this, what happens? make it specific and true
specific and true. the least glamorous magic trick
